The Evolve Back Safari
From India to Botswana
The Evolve Back Safari:
From India to Botswana
We are delighted to announce the opening of our first international property: Evolve Back Gham Dhao Lodge, Botswana. ‘Gham Dhao’ is derived from the local San language and translates to ‘Tracks of the Lion’ in English.
We were drawn to Botswana for its rugged, authentic, and deeply private wildlife encounters. Gham Dhao Lodge sits on a private 30,000-acre concession, ensuring that every sighting is an exclusive event where the wilderness doesn't just feel private- it is yours. The wild is at your doorstep and even the short drive from your tent to the main lodge is a mini-safari, with animals roaming freely through the grounds.

A Tale of Two Safaris:
India vs. Botswana
The Botswana safari offers an exhilarating contrast to the well-loved Indian jungle experience. For those who have traveled with us to Kabini you know the thrill of tracking the Royal Bengal Tiger through dense, beautiful forests. Your experience is governed by strict National Park rules, which protect these crucial ecosystems.
Botswana offers a different perspective on the wild where the landscape is open, arid, and vast. Safaris often take place in private game reserves with very few other people around. You work with your guides to track the Big Five- lion, Leopard, Elephant, Buffalo, and Rhino- across sweeping plains and ancient desert sands.
A New Frontier for the Indian Traveller
For decades, Evolve Back has been privileged to guide you through the rich biodiversity of India. Now, we are incredibly excited to showcase a country that, for the Indian luxury traveller, remains largely unexplored: Botswana.
We saw in Botswana's wilderness a land committed to high-value, low-impact tourism. It is a place that mirrors our own values, promising a life changing safari experience. We now invite you to expand your world of travel with us, journeying from the familiar heart of the Indian jungle to the vast, untamed savannas of Africa.
To mark this new chapter, we have curated 'The Signature African Journey', a 9-day odyssey that begins at our lodge in the ancient Kalahari, moves through the vibrant Okavango Delta, and concludes at the majestic Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.
From the logistics of private bush transfers to the finest luxury accommodations, we ensure that every moment is handled with the same excellence that defines our Indian resorts. We invite you to join us on this extraordinary new frontier."

Up Close and Intimate:
The Private Game Reserve Advantage
Our lodge is set within its own 30,000-acre private game reserve on the border of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. This exclusivity is the cornerstone of the Gham Dhao experience. With a strict limit on vehicles, your sighting is never a crowded event; you will often have extraordinary wildlife encounters all to yourself.
This private access allows our guides the privilege of being able to drive off-road for tracking. This means we can get closer to the action, ensuring you witness unforgettable moments, whether it’s a Cheetah on the hunt or a Leopard resting in a tree. Furthermore, we are not bound by typical park hours, allowing us to offer thrilling night drives to spot elusive nocturnal creatures and guided bush walks to connect with the landscape on foot.
This freedom allows us to craft a truly unparalleled & exclusive experience of the Kalahari ecosystem.
The Magic of Kalahari:
A Desert Unlike Any Other
The Kalahari is not the barren landscape many imagine. It is a vast, ancient ecosystem- a "thirstland" rich with resilient life and the breathtaking setting for Evolve Back Gham Dhao Lodge.
While the Kalahari spans Namibia, South Africa, and Botswana, each region holds a unique character. Unlike the famous red dunes of Namibia or the rugged bush of South Africa, the Botswana Kalahari is defined by these pale, silvery-white sands and vast golden grasslands that transform with the seasons.
The Iconic Wildlife of the Kalahari
For the discerning safari traveller, the Kalahari offers sightings that are often more rewarding due to the sheer effort the animals put into their survival.
The true kings of the Kalahari are the Black-Maned Lions. These majestic predators are larger, more muscular, and males possess a thick, dark, almost black mane- a stunning contrast against the pale gold desert grass. These prides have adapted to cover vast distances, offering a thrilling chase for our expert trackers. The fastest predator on earth, the Cheetah, thrives on these open plains. We frequently find them using termite mounds as vantage points to survey the vast landscape before launching into a spectacular, high-speed hunt.
Beyond the great cats, you will encounter creatures perfectly designed for this environment, such as the majestic Gemsbok (Oryx), whose striking black-and-white markings and long, rapier-like horns are a definitive symbol of the Kalahari. You may also encounter the unique Brown Hyena (a rare nocturnal scavenger), the comical Meerkat mobs, and the fascinating Bat-Eared Fox.

Beyond the Vehicle
Cultural Connection
At Evolve Back Gham Dhao Lodge, we believe a safari must connect you not just with the animals, but with the land's deepest roots.
Our location offers a rare opportunity to engage respectfully with the San Bushmen- the ancient, original inhabitants of the Kalahari. Spend time with a local community to learn about their ancestral connection to the land, their tracking skills, and their remarkable knowledge of survival. This is a profound, enriching cultural experience, and a moving counterpart to the wildlife sightings.

The Evolve Back Promise
Under Canvas
Our lodge offers a classic, yet sophisticated, luxury tented camp experience. Every canvas suite is designed to be an extension of the wilderness, allowing you to fall asleep to the sounds of the African night. The emphasis remains on our core philosophy: Intimate luxury, exclusive access, and a deep respect for the environment.
The Evolve Back Signature African Journey
8 Nights / 9 Days
We invite you to embark on an African safari meticulously arranged by Evolve Back. From the logistics of remote bush transfers to the smallest details of your stay, we ensure that every aspect of your journey is handled with the same excellence that defines our resorts.
This itinerary is the personal vision of our resident Africa expert, Mr. Sandeep Somayaji. Having traveled extensively across Botswana over the last three years, Sandeep has felt the fine dust of the Kalahari and the cool spray of the Okavango firsthand. He understands the thrill of descending onto a remote dirt landing strip in a bush plane & the adrenaline of spotting black-maned lions while dining under the stars, during a bush dinner.
Meet your destination expert
Mr. Sandeep Somayaji
I am Sandeep Somayaji, and I feel privileged to head the sales for Evolve Back Gham Dhao Lodge in the Central Kalahari. This role has afforded me the opportunity to merge a professional career with my lifelong passion for wildlife.
My journey has taken me from the high-paced boardrooms of Bengaluru to the profound silence of the Kalahari desert. Over the years, I have explored every corner of the 30,000-acre wilderness that defines Evolve Back Gham Dhao Lodge- tracking the legendary black-maned lions through dense thickets, venturing into the predator-rich heart of the Okavango Delta, and finally standing in awe before the thundering power of the mighty Zambezi at Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.
This is my ‘Director’s Cut’- a carefully curated nine-day journey designed in three distinct chapters. We begin at my home, the ancient Kalahari; move to the vibrant, wildlife-rich floodplains of the Okavango; and conclude at the majestic curtain of the Falls. This is the Botswana I have come to know and love.
I invite you to undertake a journey that has changed me, and one that I believe will

Chapter I
The Ancient Pulse
Destination: Evolve Back Gham Dhao Lodge, Central Kalahari
Duration: 3 Nights
The Journey into the Wild
The journey to Evolve Back Gham Dhao Lodge begins long before you reach our gates. It starts at Maun Airport, where you board a nimble, 10-seater bush plane- the lifeline of the African wilderness.
As you settle into your seat, you are close enough to watch the pilot navigate the controls. It is an exhilarating and safe experience; because Botswana’s terrain is so beautifully wild and rugged, the road less traveled is often no road at all. We rely on the incredible infrastructure of bush planes, which carry you safely and efficiently and connectconnect every corner of the country.
During the 35-minute flight to our lodge, you’ll watch the city fade away, replaced by the vast expanse of the Kalahari. Looking down at the white sands and resilient shrubs, you will be reminded of the pilot in the film 'The Gods Must Be Crazy,' who innocently dropped a Coca-Cola bottle into this very landscape, inadvertently changing the lives of the Bushmen below. :)

As we approach, you’ll descend onto our very own private dirt landing strip, quirkily named 'Haina International Airport.' Our team will be there waiting for you the moment the wheels touch the sand.
From the airstrip, it’s a short, five-minute drive to the lodge, where my manageress, Thelma Wame, and her team will be waiting to greet you. You won’t just be met with a handshake; you will be welcomed by a traditional Botswana choir, their songs and dances designed to make you feel instantly at one with the land.
I am incredibly proud to say that Gham Dhao Lodge is operated exclusively by Botswana nationals. Over sundowners and dinner, I encourage you to talk with them. You will be amazed to hear the stories of their villages and homes from all across this beautiful nation, giving you a true, heartfelt connection to the people who call this wilderness home.

Luxury in the Middle of Nowhere
At Evolve Back Gham Dhao Lodge, Our 30,000-acre private concession is your personal theatre of the wild. At Gham Dhao, we offer 'luxury in the middle of nowhere'- a sanctuary where high-end comfort meets the rawest form of nature. The heart of the property is our main lodge, which overlooks a permanent waterhole. In Botswana, we have a beautiful tradition called the Kgotla- the central meeting place of a village where people gather to share news, connect, and socialize. I personally think of this waterhole as the Kgotla of the Kalahari.

It is the social hub for the Kalahari’s residents. I have personally spent hours here, often skipping a scheduled game drive just to enjoy what we call an 'Armchair Safari.' From the comfort of our newly constructed, elevated dining room, I have watched the 'villagers' of the bush arrive: lions, leopards, giraffes, and zebras gathering for their daily social ritual at the Kgotla while I enjoyed a gourmet breakfast. There is a profound peace in watching a kudu or wildebeest at the water’s edge while you sip a coffee or a fine wine from our bar.
The lodge facilities- including a sparkling swimming pool, a cozy library, a gym, and a spa- are designed with a signature African open-format. You won’t find concrete here; instead, you’ll find the organic warmth of canvas, timber, and thatch, allowing the desert breeze to flow through the verandahs.
At Gham Dhao Lodge, and indeed throughout the lodges of Africa, the food and beverage experience is of an exceptionally high standard. Long before you even touch down at 'Haina International,' we have already begun preparing for your arrival. Our culinary team takes every dietary preference, like, dislike, and allergen into account. Whether you have a specific health requirement or a personal craving, every meal is meticulously customized to your needs. Our Head Chef, Sepongi, is the heart of our kitchen. She has been a pillar of this lodge since before Evolve Back even acquired the property, and her deep knowledge of both local flavors and international gourmet standards is unmatched. Sepongi and her team go to extraordinary lengths to ensure that every dish is a highlight of your stay.
Our guest accommodations are designed for true immersion. We have deliberately placed our tents at a distance from the main lodge to give you the authentic feeling of camping in the bush- though with far more grandeur. Because you are living amongst the wildlife, our team will pick you up and drop you off in safari vehicles; it is not uncommon to see a herd of impala or a curious zebra right from your window.
Now, let me tell you about the room itself: our Sky-Luxe Tent. This is a concept unique in all of Africa. Each 1,000-square-foot suite is a masterpiece of rustic luxury, but its crowning jewel is the Sky Bed. Located on an elevated private deck, it allows you to sleep under the vast, unpolluted Kalahari stars whenever the mood strikes. I have personally spent entire nights on my Sky Bed, and I can tell you, it is a one-of-a-kind experience that stays with you forever.
With only 11 tents nestled within our 30,000-acre reserve, we offer a level of privacy that is increasingly rare. Whether you are at the lodge or on a game drive, you will likely be the only vehicle at a sighting. This is your private Kalahari.
Traditional Welcome at Evolve Back Gham Dhao Lodge
The King of the Kalahari: The 'Scar' Experience
The true star of this region is the Kalahari Black-Maned Lion. If you remember The Lion King, he is Scar. Unlike the golden-maned Mufasa, the Kalahari kings are defined by their thick, coal-black manes- a symbol of incredible strength dominance. They say only the strongest survive here; the Kalahari is one of the driest geographies on earth, yet we are home to a thriving population of wildlife, including two resident prides that call our 30,000-acre reserve home.
During my most recent trip, I had an experience that redefined 'excitement' for me. It happened during our Bush Dinner, a signature event held once during your stay, where we dine under the vast African sky, far from the lodge by the glow of a crackling campfire.
As I sat there, Gin & Tonic in hand, sharing a laugh with my guides, a thunderous roar erupted from the nearby thickets. It was a Black-Maned Lion, and the sound seemed to vibrate right through my chest. It was, quite simply, the most exhilarating moment of my life- perhaps even more so than seeing a lion.
I could hardly concentrate on the gourmet dinner after that! My mind was already in the bush. As soon as we finished, we boarded the game viewer and headed into the heart of the night. The communication between the guide and tracker was a masterclass in bushcraft; for twenty minutes, we tracked his footsteps through the dense brush.
Finally, we caught sight of this majestic animal near the airstrip. He vanished into the shadows, but our guides knew his mind. We circled around to intercept him near one of our 'Pans'—the life-giving waterholes that dot our reserve. For the next thirty minutes, this king of the desert walked directly in front of our vehicle. Every few minutes, he let out a roar that shook the air- a raw, guttural display of marking his territory.

We followed him until he reached a rain puddle, where he drank—easily twenty liters of water—before resting to continue his vocal ritual. That hour in the dark, following the 'King of Scar’s Pride,' changed me. It is a reminder that at Gham Dhao, you aren't just a spectator; you are a witness to the raw power of nature. I am certain you will encounter your own life-changing moments here.

In the thick of the night, we found him !! Resident Black-Maned Lion - referred to as "Shortie" by our staff
Walk with the San: Living as One

While the heart of our lodge beats for the amazing wildlife , there is another experience that I hold incredibly close to my heart: the "Walk with the San"This is a journey on foot into the soul of the Kalahari with our resident San People- members of one of Earth’s oldest civilizations. They are the true masters of this landscape, and they share their ancient culture and the profound knowledge that allows them to thrive in these harsh, arid conditions.
During my last visit, I had a reminder of just how raw and unpredictable life here can be. As we set off for our bushman experience on foot, our expert trackers sensed that a lioness and her cubs had taken up residence at the 'mock village' where our walk was to end. In the Kalahari, the animals always have the right of way!
Without missing a beat, we shifted our route to an alternate site. There, under the vast sky, we shared in their traditional songs, watched them skillfully extract water from a water plant, and witnessed the age-old art of starting a fire with nothing but sticks and friction.
This is the constant excitement and thrill you come to expect at Evolve Back Gham Dhao. Whether it's a change of plans due to a lioness or a sudden wildlife encounter, you quickly realize that you aren't just a visitor here- you are literally living as one with the wild. In the heart of the Botswana jungle, every moment is a reminder that we share this home with the true kings of the desert.

Chapter II
The Delta’s Heart
Destination: Sable Alley, Khwai Private Reserve (Okavango Delta)
Duration: 4 Days / 3 Nights
From Desert Gold to Delta Green
The second chapter of our story begins with a 45-minute bush plane flight from our private airstrip to the Khwai private reserve airstrip. As we fly north, you will watch the white sands of the Kalahari dissolve into hidden lagoons, and emerald islands. You are entering the Okavango Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage site & the watery heart of Botswana’s wildlife.
Our destination is Sable Alley, a lodge in the world-renowned Khwai Private Reserve. The lodge is just a 15 minute drive away from the airstrip. Spanning almost 500,000 acres, this reserve is perfectly positioned between the legendary Chobe National Park and the Moremi Game Reserve, making it a vital corridor for massive concentrations of elephants and predators.
We have handpicked Sable Alley as our partner in the Delta because they mirror the very essence of the Evolve Back philosophy. We believe they offer the same luxury and, 'True to the Land of Origin' experiences that define our own properties. I have personally visited and experienced Sable Alley &. It is because of my firsthand experiences- that I can confidently suggest it to our guests as well.

The Transition to the Emerald Heart
Coming from the golden Kalahari, the transition is breathtaking. After landing at the Khwai private airstrip, we were met by our guide- CJ . He is a proud member of the Khwai community, and over the next few days, he became our window into the soul of the Delta. He was not just our guide, but our personal concierge by our side throughout our stay at Sable alley.
We even got a glimpse of his home in the Khwai village. We spent time at the local school, interacting with the vibrant children, and even met with a local doctor. It’s important to know that while Natural Selections operates these magnificent camps, the land is community-controlled. Every guest who stays here is a partner with the Khwai Development Trust, ensuring that tourism directly supports the people who protect this wilderness.

The Hippo Symphony &
The Mokoro
Upon arrival at the camp, we were checked into our lovely, spacious tents. The tents here are incredibly spacious and sophisticated, but my favorite feature is the view. You can sit on your private verandah with a pair of binoculars and watch a 'mini-safari' unfold right in front of you without ever leaving your room. It is the perfect marriage of high-end comfort and raw, predator-rich wilderness.
We headed to the main lodge for a delicious lunch overlooking the lagoon. Once we were settled and fueled for adventure, we set off to explore. What immediately struck me was the sheer density of life- specifically the Hippos. In this water-rich geography, they don't just exist; they thrive. I lost count after two hundred!
The most heart-stopping 'African moment' occurred during a Mokoro excursion. The Mokoro is a traditional, narrow wooden canoe, poled silently through the reeds by a guide. We had been gliding through the lilies for barely ten minutes when my guide pointed ahead. Just ten meters away, a massive herd of hippos was swimming, their eyes and ears tracking our silent passage. Being at eye-level with these giants in a hand-crafted boat is an adrenaline rush like no other.

A Masterclass in Predation:
The Leopard and the Cheetah
But the Delta is also a theater for the world’s great predators. On one particular evening, as the light began to fail, we witnessed something truly rare: a Leopard and a Cheetah in the same frame.
It was a standoff of pure tension. Both cats were positioning themselves to hunt a nearby herd of Impalas, each watching the other to see who would make the first move.
I didn't know where to point my binoculars- if I looked at the leopard, I missed the cheetah!

The drama was heightened by the Alpha male Impala, who stood his ground, letting out sharp alarm calls to warn his herd of the impending danger. He could see the 'song and dance' between the two predators better than anyone. We eventually lost sight of the leopard in the tall grass, but our guides-using their expert intuition-navigated us to a nearby tree. There he was, silhouetted against the dusk, having climbed up to gain the tactical advantage. We left them in the dark, the tension still hanging in the air.

The Morning After
The next morning, we returned to that same spot. Nature had provided its answer. The same leopard was draped across a high branch, utterly exhausted but victorious. Beside him hung his prize- the Impala kill from the night before. He had hauled the carcass up into the canopy, a display of incredible strength, knowing his meal was safe from the scavengers below.
Watching him sleep in total peace, comfortable in the knowledge that he had secured his survival for another week, was a profound experience. In the Delta, the story never stops; it simply shifts from the shadows of the night to the clarity of the morning sun

Chapter III
The Thundering Finale
Destination: Ilala Lodge Hotel, Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe)
Duration: 2 Nights

The Smoke That Thunders
For the final act of our journey, we leave the wilderness of Botswana and cross the border into Zimbabwe. Our destination is Victoria Falls. After the intimate wildlife encounters of the Kalahari and the Delta, the sheer scale of the Falls is a revelation. To stand at the edge of the world’s largest curtain of falling water & feeling the ground vibrate is the best way to bookend an African odyssey.
We boarded our final bush plane for a 45-minute flight from the Khwai airstrip to Kasane. As we touched down, I felt a sense of bittersweet nostalgia saying goodbye to Botswana & saying hello to Zimbabwe.
Our concierge met us at Kasane for a 40-minute drive to the border. Along the way, we passed close to the 'Four Corners'- the only place on Earth where four countries (Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Namibia) nearly meet within a 20km radius. The border crossing was interesting; our Botswana chauffeur guided us through a quick, hassle-free exit before a perfectly synchronized hand-off, we were met by our Zimbabwean chauffeur. He stepped in to guide us through the charmingly 'quaint' Zimbabwe immigration post, & within minutes, we were through the gates and on our way, to Victoria Falls. The drive was beautiful, winding through forests and countryside while our driver regaled us with stories of local life. By the time the first mist appeared on the horizon, we knew we had arrived.
Located on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe and fed from the Zambezi River is the spectacular Victoria Falls. Cascading 100 meters across an expanse of two kilometers it is twice as wide and twice as deep as Niagara Falls, and is often referred to as the greatest curtain of falling water in the world. The power of the falls is so mighty that it was described by the Kololo tribe living in the area in the 1800’s as ‘Mosi-oa-Tunya’ – ‘The Smoke that Thunders’.

A Glimpse into the Legend
The history of Victoria Falls is as dramatic as the waters themselves. On November 17, 1855, Chief Sekeletu of the Makololo people paddled the Scottish missionary David Livingstone to what was then known as Goat Island. Upon witnessing the massive falls, Livingstone was so moved that he named it in honor of Queen Victoria- though to the local people, it will always be known as Mosi-oa-Tunya (The Smoke That Thunders).
Decades later, the visionary entrepreneur Cecil John Rhodes commissioned the construction of the now-famous Victoria Falls Bridge. Opened in 1905, this engineering marvel was designed to fulfill Rhodes’ dream of a 'Cape to Cairo' railway, physically linking Zimbabwe and Zambia across the chasm of the Batoka Gorge.
To appreciate this history while taking in the views, I highly recommend a meal at the iconic Lookout Café. Perched on the very edge of the Batoka Gorge, the café offers breathtaking vistas of the Falls, the historic bridge, and the Zambezi River. They also offer experiences like the Zambezi Sundowner cruise, White Water Rafting and Zipline.

The Edge of the Abyss:
Cataract Pool
Of all the experiences I’ve had at Victoria Falls, the one that remains etched in my heart forever is our visit to Cataract Pool. While many have heard of Devil’s Pool on the Zambian side, I chose a more exclusive experience: Cataract Pool on the Zimbabwe side. Not only does this save you the need for a Zambian visa, but it proved to be one of the most unbelievable moments of my life.
The adventure began on the banks of the Zambezi, where we boarded a private speedboat—just three of us. The 15-minute dash across the upper Zambezi was exhilarating; we navigated heavy currents and rolling waves, passing pods of curious hippos along the way. As we approached, the 'Smoke' of the falls loomed larger, and the roar grew louder.
We finally arrived at the pool, and standing there- literally on the edge of the world's largest curtain of falling water- is an experience that defies words. Secured by a safety harness for total peace of mind, we walked, swam, and bathed at the very brink of the 350-foot sheer drop.
With the entire pool to ourselves for an hour. It was a private encounter with nature’s raw power that I will never forget. Pictures and words cannot due justice what it’s like to see and experience the falls and their sheer power.
We also took the 'Flight of Angels' helicopter tour over the falls, Seeing the immense chasm and the river’s zig-zag path through the gorge from above is the only way to appreciate the true geography of this wonder. It is One of the Seven Wonders of the World
The Conclusion
"The dust of the Kalahari, the crystal waters of the Delta, and the mist of the mighty Falls are calling. This nine-day odyssey is your chance to swap the everyday for the extraordinary, witnessing the raw theater of black-maned lions and the secret lives of leopards from the most exclusive seats in Africa. You’ve read the chapters and seen the vistas through my eyes- now it is time to feel the vibration of the 'Smoke that Thunders' for yourself. Don't just dream of the wilderness; come and claim your place in the greatest show on Earth."
